Prosecutor Porras, who is subject to sanctions from the United States and the European Union considering her “corrupt,” put the presidential transition last January in check by taking legal action in 2023 against the election of Arévalo and his Semilla party.
“The attorney general has ignored serious cases of corruption and drug trafficking and has focused on attacking democracy and the will of the people expressed in the elections. The dark cycle of Consuelo Porras must end now,” according to the leftist ruler.
This move comes amid growing tensions between the government and the Prosecutor’s Office, with Porras facing accusations of corruption, which is taking legal action against the election of Arévalo and his party in 2023 accused of irregularities.
Arévalo highlighted the need for Porras to be held accountable and removed from office, although she lacks the authority to do so directly. His reform bill seeks to restore the constitutional criteria for the removal of the attorney general, reversing a measure taken by Congress in 2018.
The president warned legislators that opposing this reform would, according to him, “perpetuate corruption and impunity” in the country, although Congress is dominated by parties that could have interests contrary to the measure.
For his part, Porras filed an appeal for protection before the Constitutional Court, arguing that the president’s actions could endanger his physical integrity and that of other officials of the Prosecutor’s Office.
