A rock climbing trip ended tragically for a 10-year-old boy and his father.

The boy fell on a via ferrata in Götzis due to wet conditions and suffered a serious head injury. The father was able to call for help quickly and the boy was taken to Feldkirch State Hospital for medical attention.

Accident on the via ferrata

On May 17, 2023, a 10-year-old boy and his 38-year-old father set off on the access route to the via ferrata via Kapf in the Banzig area in 6840 Götzis, Meschach. Unfortunately, the boy slipped, probably due to the wet ground conditions, and fell about 100 meters down the first gully of the trail.

Fall into rock interspersed terrain

The path on which the boy slipped was covered in leaves and dirt and led up steep, rocky terrain. The boy fell down the slope and came to rest on a rock plateau about five square meters in size.

Serious head injuries

During the fall, the boy suffered a serious head injury. His father was able to climb down and look after him while he was making the 911 call.

rescue and medical care

The boy was rescued by the Hohenems mountain rescue service and the crew of the Christopherus 8 helicopter using dew rescue. He was taken to Feldkirch State Hospital, where he is now being treated.
