AltspaceVR was designed by a startup company in 2013 and launched in 2015. Users have the opportunity to create their own worlds and host virtual events. They can also talk to each other in groups and work together on projects. When the platform was struggling with financial problems in 2017, Microsoft bought the service and continued it.

Service will be replaced by Microsoft Mesh
After the Microsoft takeover, the software was only further developed to a limited extent. Therefore, the service only plays a subordinate role compared to other social virtual reality applications such as VRChat. AltspaceVR seems to fall victim to austerity measures and get noisy support page will no longer be available after March 10th. However, the code should still be used in the future and will therefore be integrated into Microsoft’s XR platform Mesh.
Anyone who has used AltspaceVR or is still using it should download their data before March 10th. The content is then no longer accessible. While it is not possible to download entire worlds, most items can be saved locally. This includes metadata about the virtual rooms and a collection of individual resources. Photos, website content and metrics from previous events are also available for download. There is an option to be able to download all available content in one click. The data is provided as a ZIP archive.
