A curious incident occurred at the Essen indoor city championship on Sunday. A referee attacked a player.
Ugly scene at the Essen city championship: After the final whistle of the second group game of the SC Türkiyemsporwhich the team lost 1:5 against SV Burgaltendorf, a bizarre argument broke out in the sports hall on Hallo.
Player injured after referee attack
A referee, who did not wish to be named, was scheduled to referee the next game and apparently felt attacked by a Türkiyemspor player on the way onto the pitch. He then attacked the player. His teammates immediately rushed to help, and the Vogelheimer SV stewards de-escalated the situation.
The attacked player suffered a neck injury in the altercation. Türkiyemspor initially considered leaving the tournament early, but then decided to play in the final group game. Nevertheless, those affected were upset about the actions of the referee.
“The referee wanted to jump over the rink and tripped over the weighting stones. My player is passing by there right now. Suddenly he grabs him by the neck, hits him in the neck and puts him in a headlock. Then the tournament management intervened,” said Adem Durmus, coach of SC Türkiyemspor, describing the situation from his point of view.
In retrospect, Durmus could only speculate about what triggered the referee’s aggression: “Maybe he thought our player had kicked him. The referee comes from behind, he doesn’t even see him coming. I think it’s good that the referee was banned by the tournament management and I hope he’ll never be allowed to referee a game again.”
After a break of two games, however, the referee was reinstated, otherwise the tournament would have had to be interrupted.

Players and referees want to turn on the police
The disappointment was obvious to the Türkiyemspor coach: “You can complain and discuss, but fisticuffs don’t work at all. Our player said he wants to go to the police with this. That is his decision, I can understand it.” The referee did not want to describe his view of things to RS, but stated that he also wanted to inform the police about this dispute.
