Amazon’s growing library of sports content may soon have a home of its own. According to an insider, work is being done to set up an independent sports app that will then offer pure sports streaming in addition to Prime Video.

Like the online magazine the information reports, the group is now working on developing a new, independent streaming app to clear out Prime Video and better highlight the sporting deals with the NFL, the Premier League and the New York Yankees. Amazon had only recently secured the rights to live broadcasts of the UEFA Champions League until 2027.

The Information has not yet received any indication of when an Amazon-only sports app might appear. In addition, it has not yet been found out whether the company plans to pay separately for access to Prime Video’s sports content.

Pure speculation

Until Amazon announces a pure sports app, this will all remain just speculation. It could therefore also be that Amazon will put the plans on hold, for example if it turns out that users are not interested. Amazon declined to comment on a possible sports streaming app. Whether it makes sense for Amazon to launch a standalone sports app is not so easy to answer. On the one hand, it is certainly much more pleasant for sports fans to use a specialized application. The current Prime Video app would also do well to clear out the clutter. On the other hand, a standalone app would increase the pressure on Amazon to secure worthwhile content. In addition, the cost of sports content has increased dramatically in recent years. Amazon reportedly pays about $1 billion annually for exclusive streaming rights to the NFL’s Thursday Night Football package.
