Amazon will offer its series and films to other platforms

Amazon invests a lot of money in its own productions that can be seen on Prime Video. This is all exclusive content that cannot and should not be found anywhere else. But that will change to some extent, because Amazon also wants to license its productions to third parties.

According to a report by Variety the mail order company will in future also offer or sell series content such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Goliath and Hunters as well as films such as Borat Anschluss Moviefilm, Coming 2 America and The Tomorrow War externally. Amazon also confirms this step in a press release and announced that a sub-contractor called Amazon MGM Studios Distribution has been set up to handle external licensing.

In concrete terms, this means that the productions previously exclusive to Prime can and will also run on other streaming services and TV channels. It wouldn’t be the first time Amazon has outsourced its content, but the mail order company plans to expand this business significantly.

Acquisition of MGM is a background

Of course, this is related to the takeover of the Hollywood studio MGM. Amazon bought it almost exactly two years ago for $8.45 billion at the time. The MGM catalog contains more than 4000 films and these are an important addition to Prime Video – but also more, because Amazon can and wants to make money with it via other platforms. This means that the MGM content will play the central role here. MGM already has its distribution division responsible for productions such as The Handmaid’s Tale, Rocky, Creed and the James Bond films. But this area will be expanded and supplemented by previous Prime Video exclusive titles.

“What did Amazon buy when they acquired MGM? Well, they definitely acquired a large catalog of remake and sequel rights. They bought a catalog of finished products, but they also acquired a large distribution business,” explains Chris Ottinger , who will lead Amazon MGM Studios Distribution.
