two cardiac operations

On December 3, 2013, the then former presidential candidate underwent an emergency operation at the Médica Sur hospital in Mexico City, with “clinical evidence of a myocardial infarction.” The doctors who intervened explained that they successfully uncovered a coronary artery.

“It was possible to successfully uncover (the obstruction) before the first hour in the hospital,” said cardiologist Patricio Ortiz at the time.

On January 21, 2022, the president underwent a catheterization in a military hospital.

“In this procedure, the president’s heart and arteries were found to be healthy and functioning properly,” the Ministry of the Interior said in a statement. “It was not necessary to carry out any other type of intervention and it was a brief procedure that lasted around 30 minutes.”

López Obrador, 69, suffers from high blood pressure and has routine check-ups every month.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE PRESIDENT DIES?

The Political Constitution of Mexico, in its article 84, establishes that in this scenario it would be the Secretary of the Interior who provisionally occupies the position of President and must convene the Congress of the Union to appoint a substitute president within a period not exceeding 60 days, to complete the period until September 2024.
