The National Meteorological Service (SNM) in San Juan issued an excessive heat advisory this Sunday for towns in the urban and coastal areas of Puerto Rico.

As indicated, heat indices (CI) are anticipated that could exceed 112 degrees Fahrenheit from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Los pueblos que están bajo aviso son: Arecibo, Barceloneta, Dorado, Florida, Manatí, Vega Alta, Vega Baja, Aguadilla, Camuy, Hatillo, Isabela, Quebradillas, Aguada, Añasco, Hormigueros, Mayagüez, Moca, Rincón, San Germán y Culebra.

Meanwhile, a heat warning was issued for Bayamón, Carolina, Cataño, Guaynabo, San Juan, Toa Alta, Toa Baja, Trujillo Alto, Ceiba, Canóvanas, Fajardo, Humacao, Loíza, Luquillo, Naguabo and Río Grande.

On the other hand, the SNM extended until Monday the monitoring of excessive heat.

It is crucial to remember that high temperatures can cause heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours.

The SNM urged the population to take the necessary precautions: “These extremely high temperatures can be dangerous. It is important to stay hydrated and seek shade or air-conditioned spaces, especially during the hottest hours of the day.”

How to protect yourself from the heat?

  • Limit outdoor activities.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption.
  • Use sunscreen if you work in the direct sun.
  • Do not leave minors or pets unattended in the car.
  • If you work outdoors, take 15-minute rest periods for every hour in shade.
  • Learn to recognize the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
