WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden welcomed hundreds of people to the White House Saturday for a delayed Pride Month celebration aimed at showing LGBTQ+ people that their government stands behind them at a time when advocates are warning about an increase in discriminatory legislation, particularly directed at the transgender community. , sweeping through the state chambers.

The event, which the government described as the largest Pride event ever hosted at the White House, was initially scheduled to take place on Thursday but was postponed due to poor air quality from the Canadian bushfires. But the haze that blanketed a large swath of the East Coast last week had lifted over the nation’s capital, allowing the president and first lady Jill Biden to hold their party on the South Lawn.

“So today I want to send a message to the entire community, especially transgender children: they are loved. You are heard. You are understood. And you belong,” Biden said.
