PHILADELPHIA – A truck fire burning under an I-95 access ramp caused a portion of the highway to collapse and officials closed the highway to traffic early Sunday morning.

NBC’s Randy Gyllenhaal reported that officials on the scene said they are investigating after the north side of I-95 collapsed before 8 a.m. and the south side is “compromised.”

Gyllenhaal said officials told him “the road is gone.”

This Sunday morning, just before 9 a.m., Capt. Derrick Bowmer of the Philadelphia Fire Department said runoff from the burning truck is causing underground explosions.

“We’ll be here for a while,” he said. “We have fire coming out of those sewers.”

Concrete and road debris could be seen covering the truck on Sunday morning.

But officials told NBC10 they aren’t sure exactly what type of truck it might be, as they haven’t been able to get in there to search for a driver.

He also said travelers should avoid the area as roads are not expected to reopen any time soon.

Just before 7 a.m., smoke and flames could be seen billowing from a burning truck near the Cottman Avenue on-ramp to I-95.

At around 7 am, police vehicles were seen blocking traffic on the northern section of the highway at the Aramingo Avenue exit.

Law enforcement authorities have not provided any further information on what may have caused the fire.

Authorities have not yet reported any injuries.

This is breaking news. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
