The homosexual Algerian activist Abdelkarim Bendjeriou-Sedjerari has now been granted asylum in Germany. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) had approved his asylum application, said the SPD member of the Bundestag Kaweh Mansoori on Friday in Frankfurt am Main. Bendjeriou-Sedjerari had also taken legal action against his imminent deportation – so far without success.

The well-integrated, German-speaking man feared for his life, Mansoori explained. Authorities and courts, however, argued that he could live his sexuality in secret in Algeria. The MP attributes the fact that the case has now been decided differently to new instructions from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to the Bamf from the end of September 2022.

At that time, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) said that she had the Bamf’s decision-making practice checked and revised in accordance with the agreement in the coalition agreement.

“In the future, when examining the endangerment of queer refugees in their countries of origin in the asylum procedure, it must always be assumed that sexual orientation or gender identity is lived openly.”

Mansoori said he was very happy for Bendjeriou-Sedjerari, who can now continue his work here. The lesbian and gay association in Germany also welcomed the Bamf decision and thanked Faeser for “finally putting an end to inhuman logic”. (AFP)
