As violent crime rises, the US State Department issued a level 2 alert in the Dominican Republicwith which it recommends to its citizens that they take greater concern when they travel to this country.
The government entity cites armed robberies, homicides and sexual assaults as arguments to raise the travel warning in the Caribbean country to the yellow level.
“The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of crime on a broader scale,” they said.
Despite the warning, the State Department stresses that the development of a tourism police force and the 911 system in many parts of the country have improved security, especially in tourist areas. “These areas tend to be better policed compared to urban areas, like Santo Domingo.”
There are four levels in the State Department’s travel alert system: 1, or blue, which recommends exercising normal precautionary measures; the 2nd yellow, which suggests increasing precautions; the 3rd orange, which asks citizens to reconsider travel; and the 4th red, which recommends not to travel.

- Travelers must be aware of what is happening around them.
- It is recommended and remember that it is important not to physically resist any robbery attempt.
- Avoid displaying signs of “wealth” such as watches, expensive jewelry, or electronic equipment.
- Follow the advice of tourist agencies and the resort regarding local safety and security concerns.
Another useful tool for travelers is the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows you to receive alerts and facilitates the location of the traveler in an emergency.
They also recommend following the US State Department in Facebook and Twitter to get real-time security updates and to review the Dominican Republic Country Security Report.
Preparing an emergency contingency plan and reviewing the traveler’s checklist are also best practices.
