Arlington Public Schools Employee Charged with Kidnapping and Sexual Assault

Police have arrested an Arlington Public Schools employee for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman in Clarendon.

The woman told authorities that after leaving a bar on May 21, she was approached by a man in a black car in the 3100 block of Clarendon Boulevard, according to Arlington County police. The woman got into the vehicle and was assaulted before being able to escape.

The suspect was not a ride-share driver, and the victim had not requested a ride, according to authorities.

“During that investigation, we were able to identify a suspect and obtain warrants for his arrest, and he was arrested late last week,” said Ashley Savage of the county police.

Julio Basurto, 42, faces charges of kidnapping and forced sodomy.

The school system confirmed that Basurto is a district employee.

The suspect was interviewed by our sister network News4 in February following a series of overdoses at Wakefield High School. He is a well-known community activist who uses his Twitter platform to advocate for tenants’ rights and comment on education issues.
