Arrested at airport for hiding gun in luggage

A traveler is arrested by police after security officers at LaGuardia Airport detect a gun and a magazine with bullets hidden inside a pair of sneakers in his luggage.

When the suitcase passed through the explosives detection unit an alarm was activated, alerting the officers. They found a 45 caliber semi-automatic pistol in one shoe and a magazine with six bullets in the other.

In addition to being arrested, the person carrying the weapon will receive a fine of up to $15,000.

Passengers can travel with firearms in their luggage as long as they comply with certain security measures and are declared to the airline.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has details on how to properly travel with a firearm posted on its website.
