With the aim of bringing more light to the wishes and desires of people with physical disabilities, director Daniel Gonçalves launches, in 2023, his new documentary, Asexuality. The work talks about flirting, kissing on the mouth, dating, masturbation, capacitism and sex, between people who have some kind of limitation.
The feature has an inclusive proposal, not only in terms of theme, but also in the process of making it, and had some people with disabilities on its team, starting with the director, who has a disability of unknown origin that affects his motor coordination.
In addition to including himself in the scene, as another character in this story, Daniel also gives the floor to several interviewees who reflect on sex; and about how this field of their lives is affected by the prejudice they deal with daily in an ableist society.
One of the excerpts from the production addresses precisely these people’s desire, and how it is made invisible most of the time.
How did the idea of recording Asexuality come about?
Daniel says in the trailer that the idea for the documentary came up when he was recording his feature film My name is Daniel, in which he revisited his own trajectory. From then on, he joined Vinicius Nascimento to develop the work.
Before the documentary was ready, the script went through several national and international development laboratories. The first of these was Visões Lab 2018, which took place at the Visões Periféricas Festival, in Rio de Janeiro, and earned him the Best Project award.
In 2021, within the schedule of Brasil CineMundi, in Belo Horizonte, he participated in the Doc Brasil Meeting and won the Nuevas Miradas award, which guaranteed him the opportunity to participate in the Cuban Festival in 2022, in which he received the Docs MX award, to participate from Docs Lab in Mexico.
The film is currently being finalized and features the producers SeuFilme and TvZero, in co-production with Globo Filmes, GloboNews and RioFilme. It is expected to hit theaters in 2023.
