Survivors testified to the local press, observing that many passengers were not wearing life jackets.

At least 20 people died when a boat carrying tourists capsized in India’s southern state of Kerala on Sunday, authorities told local media.

Twenty dead have so far been recorded, according to the daily Times of India as well as the PTI press agency.

Most victims are children

“Saddened by the loss of life following the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala. (My) condolences to the bereaved families,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, pledging compensation to the next of kin of each victim.

The incident happened in Tanur, a coastal town in Malappuram district, Kerala. Rescue operations are underway.

Most of the victims are children, during school holidays, said the sports minister of the state of Kerala who is coordinating the rescue efforts. More than 30 people were on the boat when the incident happened.

Four people in critical condition were taken to hospital, the source told PTI. The reason for the vessel’s capsizing remains unknown at this time.
