“This car is incredible,” said an exultant Alonso, in a second youth at 41, as soon as he got out of the car after signing his 102nd podium in the premier class, the fourth in the first five races of the year: something that is not he had achieved since 2012, in his penultimate year at Ferrari; and that confirms it in third place in the World Cup, with 75 points; 44 less than the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), a brilliant winner in Miami and who now leads his teammate, the Mexican Sergio Pérez, by fourteen.
“I did quite a solo race, with nothing ahead of me, except the Red Bulls that are in another dimension. Ferrari was worse than expected and I felt a bit alone in the race”, commented the double world champion from Asturias after finishing third on the track designed around the stadium where the Miami Dolphins, an NFL team, play at home; the professional football league.
“The start on the dirty side worried me a bit, but in the end everything went well,” he commented, in the interview conducted at the foot of the track by his former English teammate Jenson Button -world champion in 2009-, Alonso; that this season has been third in the Bahrain premiere, he repeated that position in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and finished in that position again five weeks ago in Melbourne (Australia).
The great Asturian pilot had been fourth in Azerbaijan a week ago; and this Sunday, by finishing third in Miami, he achieved his fourth podium in five races. Something that had not happened for almost eleven years, when he chained five drawers in the Grand Prix of Korea, India, Abu Dhabi, the United States and Brazil; in his penultimate year at Ferrari.
“Now comes a rest and then three consecutive weekends in Imola (Italy), Monaco and Barcelona in which we will go to the top. At the beginning of the season, the thought of a podium was almost unbelievable; now we want more; maybe a second place ”, Alonso answered, laughing, when asked about his intentions by Button.
“The truth is that Red Bull is very, very strong. But we’ll see. Maybe in Monaco or Barcelona we will have an opportunity”, commented Fernando, who debuted in F1 in 2001 and who -after two absents, in which he won, among others, the World Resistance Championship (WEC) and (twice) the 24 Hours of Le Mans (France) – faces its twentieth season in the premier class. In which he counts 32 victories: the first almost twenty years ago; and the last one up to now, almost ten years ago.
“In the race I was alone and in the end I dedicated myself to watching on the screens how Lance was doing; to see if I could help him get into the points, ”he later explained to the Dazn television channel, the Asturian star; in reference to his teammate, the Canadian Stroll, who started eighteenth and could not get past twelfth this Sunday in Florida.
“It’s been a weird weekend. On Sundays we go well, in the race; but now there are some races in which Sunday is less important than Saturday, for example. And we will have to look at how we can improve in those aspects”, pointed out Fernando.
“Today we have lost some points compared to Mercedes, who got both their cars into the points; but we will recover them in the next races”, Alonso said this Sunday after once again surprising everyone by finishing third in the Miami Grand Prix. EFE
