Harry Kane scored 200 Premier League goals yesterday evening – third place in the all-time ranking behind Wayne Rooney (208) and Alan Shearer (260). In total, there are even 267 goals in the jersey of Tottenham Hotspur, with which the 29-year-old also pushed past Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves and became the club’s record goalscorer.
Almost incidentally, Kane also secured the 1-0 win against Manchester City with his milestone. An evening that could hardly have gone better from Tottenham’s point of view. Until Kane was asked by Norwegian TV station ‘Viaplay’ about a contract extension. The answer much conspicuously reserved from: “I’m here to show my performance in every game and to give everything for the club. We’ll see what happens.”
He now wants to concentrate on the sporting side, because “The FA Cup and the Champions League are coming up” and be “in a good position in the league”. All is well, Tottenham’s supporters will have thought – but where is the commitment? Anyone who waited for a declaration of love did so in vain.
Hot poker phase
With good reason: Kane’s contract expires in 2024. In the background, his management will be busy working on his client’s future. And that does not necessarily have to be with the Spurs. Recently, the Londoners drew hope, but there are also big caliber players like Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
For months, the Tottenham and England captain has been considered a promising candidate for a place in the Munich strike center. Even if Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (33) has been doing well for months and should be rewarded with a new contract, Bayern want to have a top star in the opposing box again in the long term after Robert Lewandowski (34) left. That it will be Kane has at least not become less likely with yesterday’s quote.
