Auchan is preparing to open its first store in Algeria by the end of 2023. The French food retailer has signed a joint statement with the local group Great Way, which already operates in Algeria and will be responsible for managing of the shop.
This will be Auchan’s first store in Algeria and the third in Africa after Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire. The store will be located in Algiers and will have an area of 5,000 square meters. Auchan and Great Way are also considering further development across the country.
Auchan has chosen to partner with Great Way for its establishment in Algeria. This local group is indeed very present in the country with 80 world-renowned brand stores in the textile and sports sectors. Great Way thus brings its knowledge of the country and the sector to carry out the project of establishment of Auchan in Algeria.
In addition to the opening of its first store in Algeria, Auchan and Great Way intend to promote the creation of local and responsible agricultural sectors. The establishment of Auchan in Algeria will also promote the development of the country’s food industry. These actions are part of a sustainable development and corporate social responsibility approach.
Auchan, already present in Senegal and Ivory Coast
With the opening of its first store in Algeria, Auchan becomes present in its 14th country in the world. The French food distributor is already established in Africa with stores in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire. In Senegal, Auchan has 37 stores as well as a merchant site coupled with a drive-thru and a home delivery service. In Ivory Coast, Auchan arrived in June 2022 and has 13 points of sale in Abidjan and Bouaké, as well as a delivery service.
In addition, the group had hit the headlines in 2022 by refusing to leave Russia despite pressure to do so from the Ukrainian government, which accused it of financing the Russian war effort. Last year, ELO, the distributor’s holding company, posted a modest net profit of 42 million euros in 2022, eight times lower than in 2021.
