Avatar 2, THE blockbuster of 2022?

That’s it. In less than a month, Avatar (2): La Voie de l’Eau has crossed the 10 million admissions mark in France, which makes the film signed James Cameron the biggest success at the cinema in France since the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020. As a reminder, Disney had until then used to hold the record for admissions in France. In 2019, it was the live-action remake of The Lion King which finished first at the French box office, with 10,035,930 admissions, while it was Spider-Man: No Way Home which held the record for admissions since the start of containment in March 2020.

And if you still haven’t watched it, we remind you that this new episode takes us on the adventures of Jake Sully on Pandora, a planet far from Earth and populated by the Na’Vi, large blue humanoid beings, that Humanity seeks to colonize for its resources. In this context, our hero will leave the people of the forest to save his family from the humans who try to kill them. Despite this impressive record less than a month from the release of the film, Avatar 2 remains far for the moment from the scores of the previous works of its director, James Cameron. With regard to Titanic, the latter had generated 21 million admissions in France, while Avatar first of the name, released in 2009, had moved 14.7 million spectators in theaters. With its 10.1 million spectators, Avatar 2 is therefore on the road to overtaking its predecessor.especially because France is the third country in which the feature film has the most success, behind the United States and China, unsurprisingly.

Also in the press release released by Disney, we learn that James Cameron’s feature has grossed $1.7 billion at the global box office, making it the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time. It is therefore without too many surprises that the franchise will be entitled to sequels in the future. But where we can be surprised is that James Cameron has already planned three very clear sequels in his mind, with a third installment in 2024, a fourth in 2026 and finally a fifth and final installment which should close the franchise in 2028. So we’re not done hearing about Avatar in the future.
