Game News Avatar 2: James Cameron admits he was wrong

2 billion dollars needed to make Avatar 2 profitable? Finally, James Cameron may have seen a little too big…

After the stratospheric success of the first installment in 2013, James Cameron was entitled to expect a similar reception for the long-awaited sequel to Avatar. The production team was also so confident that it took the necessarily very expensive decision to chain the shooting of the second and third film of the saga in the studio at the same time. In total, the director even planned to make five films. At the global level, the stakes are therefore colossal. Cameron James claimed a few weeks earlier that to be truly profitable, Avatar 2 had to exceed $2 billion worldwide.… a feat achieved by Avatar first of the name, Avengers Endgame, Titanic, Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens, or even Avengers Infinity War. Apparently Avatar 2 would have cost Disney $350 million, not including advertising; the production would even climb to a billion if one decides to take into account all the expenses for the sequels.

But it turns out that Cameron’s estimates were readjusted a few days later. The man now claims his feature film has to pretty much be among the ten highest-grossing films of all time to break even. This would then correspond to 1.5 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. “I was a little inaccurate“, he confided to a Chinese media. Remarks frowned upon by some spectators who then accused the director of having inflated the expected figures in order to encourage admissions to the cinema.

On the first day of January 2023, Avatar: The Waterway had already accumulated $1.378 billion in worldwide box office receipts. That’s $421.6 million generated in the US and $956.9 million in the rest of the world.

A global success that only marks the beginning

The feature film has already entered the top 15 of all-time grossing films at the worldwide box office, easily surpassing dark room behemoths such as the latest Harry Potter, The Deathly Hallows Part 2. 500,000 spectators per day, it becomes in any case the most viewed film in 2022 in France. A feat that was achieved in just sixteen days thanks to no less than 7.4 million spectators in France. It was thus easily ahead of Top Gun and its 6 million admissions.

You are not done with Avatar: We should be entitled to a new episode every two years: Avatar 3 in 2024, Avatar 4 in 2026, part of the filming of which has already been done, and Avatar 5 for 2028 of which only the script is finalized for the time being. The sequel is expected to be darker than its predecessors. “I want to reveal the Nav’is from another angle because for now I have only shown their good sides” confides James Cameron recently in the columns of 20 Minutes.
