It’s not far from James Cameron’s insanely expensive sequel actually starting to turn a profit now. This despite the fact that the director himself had his doubts and as recently as a few months ago in an interview with GQ told how Avatar: The Way of Water would have to become the fourth highest-grossing film ever to even break even. Yep, the film has been incomprehensibly insanely expensive to produce, something that is also clearly reflected in its visual spectacle.
Much now points to the fact that it is only a matter of time before the film that continues to clean house at the cinemas actually starts to turn a profit. Totally crazy but people are literally flocking to the screenings and Avatar: The Way of Water shows no sign of waning in popularity. Something that Cameron himself commented on in an interview with Variety.
“It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels . I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years. … The point is we’re going to be okay.”
“I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film so we’ re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”
With that said, the future looks bright for the film series and many now point to Avatar 4 and 5 being given the green light. The third film which is already shot and in post production will premiere on December 20th 2024 and Cameron already has big plans for the Na’vi race and how the story will continue.
