US singer Nick Carter (43) has rejected allegations against him of alleged sexual assault. His lawyer wrote in a statement on Wednesday that US pop singer Melissa Schuman, 38, has been making “false” claims about the Backstreet Boys singer for many years.

Schuman, former singer of girl band Dream, is now suing Carter in a civil lawsuit, People.com reported. She is fighting to make the music business a safer place to work and perform, Schuman wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.

In 2017, she said Carter had been sexually assaulted in 2003. The then 22-year-old singer invited her to his apartment in Santa Monica, California, when she was 18 and raped her there. Carter denied the allegations at the time. All actions were consensual. There was no criminal trial. The case was statute-barred, the public prosecutor announced in 2018.

Further allegation of rape and counterclaim

Carter was sued by another woman last December for alleged sexual assault in 2001. At the age of 17, she was raped by the then 21-year-old Carter on his tour bus after a concert in Washington state, the woman said. Carter’s legal team denied the allegations in a statement. In February, Carter responded with a counterclaim. In it he accuses both women of defamation, among other things.

Carter joined the Backstreet Boys in the mid ’90s. The five-piece band is one of the most successful boy groups in the world. The singer has been married to Lauren Kitt Carter since 2014 and they have three young children. (dpa)
