As things stand at present, lithium-ion batteries cannot be used as a long-term storage option for electricity, primarily because they also discharge themselves over time. The reason for this problem has now been found.

Canadian researchers have tried to get to the bottom of the mysterious self-discharge. To get a point of reference, different battery cells with different discharge rates were examined with regard to their differences. It turned out that neither the material composition nor the design of the active elements in the memory were to blame for the discharge.

Rather, an adhesive tape turned out to be the culprit. This is basically used in all cells to hold the layers of the battery together. However, it does not seem to play any role in energy storage itself, so that relatively little attention has been paid to the adhesive tape up to now.

Practical solution in sight

However, more detailed investigations, which followed the suspicion, showed that the heat generated during the operating processes causes atoms to detach from the plastic to a certain extent and chemical reactions with the battery materials are the result. This consumes energy that is chemically stored in the active components of the battery cell.

The problem can be solved in a correspondingly simple manner: If a different adhesive material is used, the self-discharge effect can be significantly reduced. And this should not even require complex, extensive research work. According to their own statements, the researchers are already in contact with various battery manufacturers in order to implement a speedy improvement. However, this may well be an important, but not the only problem that leads to a slow self-discharge. However, other effects are not quite as strong.
