The Berlin SPD wants to refrain from terminating tenants of the state’s allotment gardens this year. A corresponding demand is included in the resolution that the parliamentary group decided on Saturday at a retreat in Nauen, Brandenburg.

“Allotment gardens are places of social integration in the city,” says the resolution. “These grown structures must not be destroyed due to the current energy price crisis and inflation.” Unpaid additional costs or leases should not lead to the loss of the allotment garden. The moratorium should apply at least to state-owned allotment areas, “but also include private areas if possible,” according to a draft application by the parliamentary group.

There are around 57,000 state-owned allotment gardens in Berlin. The city has a total of 877 allotment gardens with 70,953 plots on around 2,900 hectares.
