He had been arrested for allegedly endangering public order and collaborating with opponents of the regime. According to a report, Mohammed Rassulof is now free again.

Tehran – According to a media report, the Iranian filmmaker and Berlinale winner Mohammed Rassulof has been released after around seven months in Tehran’s notorious Ewin prison. This was reported by the news portal “Eghtesad-News”.

Rassulof was arrested in July last year for allegedly endangering public order and collaborating with opponents of the regime.

His arrest was linked to the collapse of a shopping arcade in the southwestern city of Abadan in May last year that killed more than 40 people. As a result, there were protests critical of the regime in Abadan, which were violently suppressed by the police and security forces. More than 70 people from the Iranian film industry called for an end to police violence using the appeal allegedly initiated by Rassulof and the hashtag “Put your gun down”.

The 50-year-old Rassulof, who received the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 2020 for his film “There Is No Evil”, is considered a filmmaker critical of the regime in the country. Despite being banned from working for many years, he always managed to make films. He lives alternately in Tehran and Hamburg. dpa
