Anyone who needs professional features for the camera of their Apple cell phone currently likes to use special apps such as Halide (photos) or Filmic Pro (video). Apparently, Apple would like to intervene here in the future. At least that’s what the new recording function that is integrated into the iPad version of Final Cut Pro, which will be released on May 23rd, shows. Apple presents these in a video for the new app that was published on YouTube and also shows the iPad version of Logic Pro. Now the Apple scene is wondering whether such a professional mode could also be planned for the iPhone.

With Final Cut Pro for iPadOS it will be possible to make recordings directly in the app, which will then flow straight into the timeline. The camera feature offers some functionality that is missing in the previous standard camera app. Manual functions for white balance, exposure and focus in landscape or portrait mode are included. How exactly they work can only be partially deduced from the video, but all of this makes you want more.

A screen shows the new white balance, for example. Here you can choose between automatic mode (like the iPhone), fixed setting (fixed white balance) and different ambient brightness (from fluorescent tubes with 4000K to shady with 7000K). There are also various monitoring options that have so far been completely missing in the camera app. These include indicators for the remaining recording time, levels of the connected microphones (including internal) as well as zebra and false color displays to identify problematic image areas. There’s a new overexposure indicator and switchable grids that go beyond what’s in the camera app.

It’s quite amazing that Apple implements all these features in the iPad of all places, which isn’t an ideal film device – the manufacturer’s best cameras are still in the iPhone. However, no version of Final Cut Pro has been announced for this – if only because of the smaller display, it would be rather difficult than realizable. Accordingly, the scene now hopes that at least the pro-camera mode could become part of the next version of iOS. iOS 17 will be unveiled at the WWDC developer conference in less than a month.

Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for the iPad (Video: Apple).

Apple had recently implemented more and more professional functions in the iOS camera app – if only because it has to contain all the camera features that the current iPhone can handle. For example, since iOS 15 you can work with ProRes video recordings. Apple has not yet commented on a precise connection of the iPhone in Final Cut Pro for the iPad – but it is conceivable that there could be a direct connection here. Multistream editing is integrated into the app. Apple offers Final Cut Pro and Logic on the tablet in a subscription package. You have to pay 50 euros a year or 5 euros a month to use it. A single purchase like on the Mac is not planned.
