Biden administration asks Abbott to remove floating barrier on the Rio Grande

HOUSTON – The government of President Joe Biden has asked Governor Greg Abbott to remove the floating barrier that he has been installing in the Rio Grande and has given him until the 24th of this month to respond to the Justice Department’s request.

The letter to Abbot was sent by Deputy Attorney General Todd Kim and Attorney General for the Western District of Texas Jaime Esparza.

In the document, dated July 20, the Justice Department warns Abbott that if he fails to comply with the requirement to remove the buoys from the Rio Grande, he would be willing to sue Texas.

According to the Department of Justice, the installation of this floating barrier “violates federal laws”, such as the Law of Rivers and Ports and implies a risk to navigation, as well as security and raises concerns of a humanitarian nature.

“We do not rule out taking legal action that would require the removal of the obstruction on the Rio Grande,” the Justice Department letter to Abbott says.

The governor of Texas decided to put the buoys on the Río Grande in order to stop the flow of migrants who cross this route from Mexico.
