“History has taught us that democracy is never, ever, ever guaranteed. Every generation has had to fight to keep it, treasure it, defend it and strengthen it,” she said during a Fourth of July barbecue at the White House with military relatives.
Accompanied by the first lady, Jill Biden, and the Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, the president affirmed that the United States is the only nation in the world founded on the idea that “all human beings are created equal.”
Biden claimed that all people have “inalienable rights” such as the right to life, liberty and happiness, and stated that the United States should not stray from these principles.
In addition, he stressed that during its 247-year history the country has made “great progress” thanks to “the people of this nation and not because of its politicians.”
“We have to keep the faith and always remember who we are. We are the United States of America and there is nothing we cannot achieve if we work together,” he exclaimed.
Biden, 80, will seek his re-election in the 2024 presidential elections, in which he could again compete with former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), 77, and favorite in the Republican primaries.
The Democratic leader has insisted on several occasions that American democracy is in danger due to the extremist ideas represented by Trump, who encouraged an assault on the Capitol in 2021 by not acknowledging his electoral defeat against Biden.
Last week, the conservative supermajority of the Supreme Court dealt several blows to progressives by striking down a plan to forgive part of the student debt, by eliminating affirmative action that favored the access of racial minorities in universities and by ruling that a business may deny services to same-sex couples on religious grounds.
