In a new interview with Vogue the 21-year-old singer opens up about how she developed body positivity, after being in a darker place growing up.

– Going through my teenage years hating myself and all that stupid shit, she says and continues:

– A lot of it came from my anger at my body, and how angry I was about how much pain it has caused me, and what I’ve lost because of things that have happened to it.

Hypermobile joints

As a 13-year-old, Eilish suffered a growth plate injury. This resulted in the singer having to give up his great hobby: dancing.

– I was injured right after we had made “Ocean Eyes”, she shares.

– After that, music replaced dance in a way.

Subsequent years of lower body injuries and misdiagnoses increased the alienation Eilish felt in her own body.

– I felt that my body was “gaslighting” me for years.

– I had to go through a process where I had to learn that my body is actually part of me, and not out to harm me, shares the 21-year-old.

Furthermore, Eilish says that she was eventually diagnosed with hypermobile joints – a condition where the joint can bend outside its typical range of motion.

According to the singer’s mother, Maggie Baird, Eilish has to rule out a number of treatments because of the diagnosis.

– Treatments that are helpful to others, such as certain types of massage or chiropractor, may actually harm her, explains Baird.

Climate activist

In the interview, Eilish also discusses her own awareness of climate change. On the cover of the magazine, the singer poses with young climate activists.

Eilish says that she tries to be more aware of the choices she herself makes in everyday life.

– I shouldn’t make products. I shouldn’t be selling anything. It’s just more crap to hit the junk heap one day, I know it.

– But nobody is going to stop wearing clothes, nobody is going to stop making things. So I just try to do it the best way I can, reflects the singer.
