Rumors indicate that Samsung is considering replacing Google with Bing as the default search engine on the brand’s cell phones, which would have left the Mountain View Giant in a state of panic. The information is from a report published by The New York Times last Sunday (16).

According to the article, Samsung informed Google about the possibility of starting to use Bing last month. If the South Korean brand chooses to use Microsoft’s search engine on Galaxy devices, Google could have an annual revenue impact of around US$ 3 billion.

Google runs against time

Samsung’s signaling lit the alert on Google. Also according to the Times, the company is running out of time to develop a new integrated search solution with conversational AI to rival Bing.

While Bing is experiencing its resurgence phase due to the integration of OpenAI’s GPT technology, Google is dealing with the lukewarm launch of Bard, presented in March, which was the target of criticism for its performance below expectations.

In this scenario, Google would be “radically changing” its strategy, according to the report, to create new tools using AI and even calling on its employees to bring ideas to be presented to Samsung. Some of this news can be expected as early as May, at the I/O 2023 conference.

In addition to Samsung, Google must also be concerned about Apple: the contract with Apple, estimated at US$ 20 billion, is also open to renegotiation this year. Apple used Bing as its default search engine for a few years, but switched back to using Google in 2017.
