Mexican bishops launched a new call to respect the constitutional principles of the Mexican electoral system, in the face of the so-called “Plan B” promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Ramón Castro Castro, secretary general of the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate (CEM), spoke about it in a video broadcast on the social networks of this association, which brings together the bishops of the 32 entities of the country.

“Given the controversy that has been generated by the electoral reform proposal that is being discussed in the Congress of the Union, within the so-called ‘Plan B’, the bishops of Mexico express our concern over various allegations that have been made about irregularities in the legislative process and on the content of amendments to various electoral laws, due to the importance of the institutions responsible for electoral processes such as the INE and the right that citizens have to guarantee free and fair elections,” he stressed.

On behalf of the bishops, Monsignor Castro called for the legislative and judicial decisions that are agreed to respect the constitutional principles of certainty, legality, independence, impartiality and objectivity.

The request was addressed to legislators and authorities participating in these deliberations, to whom they expressed their confidence that they will resolve in strict accordance with the law, stating that the consolidation of democracy, well-being, peace and harmony are currently very necessary. in Mexico.

“As a Church in Mexico, we have highlighted democracy on several occasions, as an indisputable sign of the times, as one of the most appropriate ways to improve and strengthen civic and political institutions that ensure freedom, human rights and justice, and that promote the well-being and development of the community due to their participatory and representative nature,” he said.

On October 31, 2022, the CEM defended the National Electoral Institute (INE) and asked that it be respected, stating that otherwise it would fall back.
