Blinken assures that the summit between the US, South Korea and Japan is "criticism" for the Indo-Pacific region

The trilateral meeting will take place on August 18 in Washington

MADRID, 16 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The secretary of the United States Department of State, Antony Blinken, has assured that the trilateral summit with South Korea and Japan, to be held in Washington on August 18, is “vital” for the Indo-Pacific region.

“Japan and South Korea are essential allies not only in the region, but in the world. Strengthening our trilateral cooperation is vital to deliver for our people, the region and the world. It is a force multiplier for good,” he declared. Blinken during a press conference.

“It helps us promote peace and stability and furthers our commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. It promotes our shared values and helps uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter such as sovereignty, independence and integrity territory. It allows us to further expand opportunities and prosperity,” he added.

In addition, he has assured that the summit comes at a time when the region and the world “are being tested by geopolitical competitions, by the climate crisis, by the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and by nuclear threats”.

That is why “America’s efforts” are focused on the idea of a “free, open, prosperous, secure, resilient and connected” Indo-Pacific, and in which “the rules are set transparently, are applied fairly, and where goods, ideas, and people can flow legally and freely.”

“This is why the President of the United States, Joe Biden, will host this historic meeting to discuss strengthening cooperation in areas such as physical and economic security, humanitarian assistance, development financing, global health and emerging technologies.

“This is something that I have been working closely towards for many, many years, building a collaboration between the United States, Japan and South Korea (…). Over the years, we have gone from addressing difficult issues and sensitive issues in history to an increasingly ambitious agenda, (…) this growing partnership will continue to allow us to do more for the safety and prosperity of all,” Blinken concluded.

Joe Biden will receive this Friday, August 18, the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, and the President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, at Camp David, the rest residence of the US President and located on the outskirts of Washington DC.

Kishida and Yoon’s visit to the United States at a time when tensions on the Korean peninsula have escalated both due to joint military exercises between Washington and Seoul and continued missile launches by Pyongyang.

For its part, the United States has already sent two nuclear-powered submarines to the region, further angering North Korean officials, who have hardened their warmongering rhetoric in recent weeks.

In fact, the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, requested this Monday “an urgent increase” in the production of ammunition so that the Army is prepared “to face any war at any time”, statements that are found in accordance with his recent rhetorical escalation, since a few days ago he asked the Army to intensify preparations for an offensive war that would allow neutralizing “any form of attack in one fell swoop.”

In addition, the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises will take place between August 21 and 31, in which the US and South Korean Armies will practice computer simulation-based contingency drills, simultaneous field training, civil defense drills, and counter-terrorism responses. and cyber attacks.
