There are only three weeks left until the launch of PlayStation VR2, Sony’s next attempt at virtual reality. The new glasses entice with a greatly improved experience and a flurry of games, but fans have probably not been fully convinced yet.

A fresh one Bloomberg-report claims that Sony has received fewer pre-orders for the PlayStation VR2 than expected.

PlayStation VR2 will get 30 games at or soon after launch.

Sources who have spoken to the website say that the Japanese company has therefore adjusted down its sales expectations. Instead of two million PlayStation VR2 copies, only one million will reportedly ship to stores during the platform’s first quarter.

Sony would not say anything about the case to Bloomberg, but has since made another statement Gamesindustry.biz. The PlayStation maker says that no cuts have been made in the production of the PlayStation VR2.

As several people have pointed out on social media, Sony uses the word “production figures”. The company does not say anything about sales expectations or shipments to stores, so the statement is not a direct denial of Bloomberg’s article.

If demand is actually lower than expected, the price of the PlayStation VR2 could potentially take some of the blame. In this country, you have to shell out around NOK 6,700 for the PlayStation VR2, i.e. more than the PlayStation 5 console you need to use the headset. Backwards compatibility is also scrapped, so you can’t play the PlayStation VR games you already own.

– PlayStation VR2 is not going to be anything more than an expensive accessory for PlayStation 5, industry analyst Damian Thong predicted when asked by Bloomberg.

Whether PlayStation VR2 will be a big success or not we will see from February 22, when the headset is rolled out in stores.
