Those who thought that physical media are definitely dead are very wrong. That’s because the successor of blu ray is coming and promises to arrive with records of 1TB in storage. The information comes from the TechRadar portal, which received contact from the company Folio Photonics through its CEO, Steve Santamaria. This is a startup with that idea in mind.

In this case, the representative states that the initial capacity of the items will be 1TB at the start of production. However, the objective is to surpass the mark of 10TB until the end of the decade. Therefore, physical media can be reborn after being sidelined with the growth of streaming services and cloud storage.

The new types of disks, however, will not replace these existing solutions, but should operate as a complement for the user who wants to store his items. Still, the other specifications for the successor to Blu Ray have not yet been released. The director of Folio Photonis, Travis Johnsoncommented:

While actual specs have yet to be published, we believe this capability and MSRP is highly achievable due to our materials/manufacturing innovations.

That said, the startup has in mind charging $3 (BRL 15) per TB. In the case of Blu Rays, a box with 50 units of 25GB would be around $16 (BRL 82) per TB. Finally, the problem begins with the devices capable of playing this type of media, which must be between $3,000 and $5,000 (between BRL 15,400 and BRL 25,700).

Prices eventually fall over time as the technology is adopted by a larger share of people. However, it is a very high value to operate with this type of disk. Even so, Folio Photonics’ idea is to take this novelty to the corporate market.

Still on Blu Ray, it is worth remembering that Intel’s Rocket Lake generation brought processors without support for 4K media. Finally, if you have disks like this and want a suggestion of what to do, TudoCelular has an article on how to rip the content.
