Blue Beetle also has space for video games: the film's director was inspired by Mega Man to design one of Jaime Reyes' weapons

There are very few days left for Blue Beetle, the new DC Studios movie, to hit theaters around the world with the intention of presenting the franchise’s first Latino superhero on the big screen. And if you still have doubts about whether you should go see it, its director has given two big reasons to do it.

In an interview with Discussing FilmÁngel Manuel Soto explained that the film is full of references and inspirations from other highly acclaimed works, such as Akira or The fifth element. However, among all these, the one that has caught our attention the most is that one of its weapons is directly inspired by the Mega Man cannon, the mythical video game character who has accompanied the director since his childhood. But this has not been the only reference related to this industry.

“We managed to create something that represented that kind of flesh and blood intimacy that can exist in violence, but at the same time we played with different alternatives that are fantastic and fulfill the wishes of a young man. For example, we used many of the combos from Injustice 2 for reference during fights and at weapon demonstrations. Blue Beetle’s blaster is even inspired by Mega Man!”

According to Soto, Injustice 2 has been one of the main sources of inspiration for shaping Blue Beetle’s fighting style, something that fans of this magnificent fighting game developed by NethrerRealm Studios you will surely appreciate, considering the care they put into every character movement in this title.

The Puerto Rican filmmaker has not stopped mentioning references throughout the interview, such as the Cloud’s Deadly Sword in the superhero’s saber or even scenes from Dragon Ball that he has not wanted to talk about much so as not to ruin the surprise when we see it on the big screen next August 18, 2023.
