BMW announced on Monday that it is expanding support for its digital car keys to Android. Initially, eleven select models from Samsung and Google will support the “Digital Car Key Plus” feature, which allows you to lock/unlock the doors and start the vehicle’s engine using the cellphone’s ultra-wideband sensors.

Until then, the feature was only compatible with Apple cell phones. The German automaker decided to expand the function’s availability to more devices by acquiring support for Android 13 (or later). On Galaxy, digital keys will only be available in countries that have Samsung Wallet, including Brazil.

The digital keys of the manufacturer’s cars work through the cell phone’s ultra-wideband chip, so the list of compatible devices is limited. At the moment, only cars produced from November 2022 are compatible with Digital Key Plus on Android, but BMW intends to expand the offer soon.

To use the Pixel or Galaxy as a BMW digital key, you need to download the My BMW app from the Play Store. The software allows vehicle owners to share their keys with up to five friends and family members who have compatible devices, if needed, as well as open the trunk and control other vehicle features.
