Book Day, a vehicle for change and social cohesion

MIAMI. – April 23 is World Health Day. Book and Copyright. The proposal for this anniversary was presented by the International Union of Editors (UTE), and presented by the government of Spain to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), who approved it in 1995.

The date coincides with the death of Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Verga, three transcendent figures of universal literature. Regarding this celebration, UNESCO promotes creativity, diversity and equality in access to knowledge. Annually, the United Nations names a city as World Book Capital: By 2024, the designation will fall to Strasbourg, located in the northwest of France.

“UNESCO and the World Book Capital Advisory Committee were impressed by Strasbourg’s interest in books as a means to address the challenges of social cohesion and climate change,” said Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO.

In this sense, the organization argued that in that French city there are initiatives for the promotion of books, among which the Read for the Planet program stands out.

Additionally, Strasbourg “highlights the role of books in sharing environmental concerns and scientific knowledge, while prioritizing young people as agents of change.”

The function of a book

The United Nations highlights the role of a book to entertain and educate. Hence, World Book Day seeks to guarantee an encounter with reflection and learning, while at the same time establishing itself as drivers of cultural encounter.

“In times of uncertainty, many people turn to books as a refuge and source of Swedes“says the UNESCO.

Likewise, through reading empathy is developed and emotional security is strengthened. At this point, neurologists from the Quirnsalud Córdoba Hospital, Spain, indicate that the knowledge derived from the action of reading reduces stress “when approaching unknown situations and facilitates social relationships.”

According to what was disclosed by Europa Press“when reading, cognitive processes are activated that manage to interpret signs that subsequently generate knowledge schemes and finally produce emotions.”
