LBrazil’s public prosecutor’s office on Friday asked the Supreme Court to open an investigation into ex-president Jair Bolsonaro for his possible responsibility in the ransacking of public buildings by his supporters in Brasilia on January 8.

Mr. Bolsonaro, who has been in the United States since the end of December, is to be among those subject to an investigation “which seeks to clarify the instigation and the moral magisterium of the undemocratic acts which have led to episodes of vandalism and violence in Brasilia,” the prosecution said in a statement.

The far-right former president, narrowly beaten by left-wing candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, “made a public incitement to the execution of a crime” by posting a video on social networks “challenging the regularity of the presidential election of 2022”.

The video was published two days after the violent invasion of the headquarters of the presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court by thousands of Bolsonarists on January 8, then deleted, the prosecution said.

The prosecution maintained that even if the video had been broadcast after the ransacking, it could provide “a link of proof” which justified “a global investigation into the acts carried out before and after January 8, 2023” by Jair Bolsonaro.
