Lhe toll of severe weather in the United States is growing. Tornadoes and severe storms have killed at least nine people in the southeast of the country.


Nationwide, the US Weather Service reported 33 tornadoes and severe storms on Thursday. The state of Alabama was particularly affected: seven people were killed there, Autauga County police confirmed on Friday.

“A major tornado”

In Autauga and in the town of Selma, about fifty kilometers away, the meteorological service had warned of “a large and extremely dangerous tornado”. Dozens of homes in the area were destroyed. In Selma, most roads were blocked by power lines and downed trees.

In the state of Georgia, a 5-year-old child was killed when a tree fell on a car. A Georgia Department of Transportation employee also died, the state governor confirmed Friday. Atlanta International Airport, the largest in the United States in terms of passenger numbers, had to immobilize planes on Thursday.
