About four out of ten Brazilians (45.9%) believe that vaccines against Covid-19 should be mandatory, according to a survey carried out by the study center I am sciencefrom the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), in partnership with the Ideia Big Data Research Institute.

The researchers heard the opinion of 1,200 Brazilians aged over 16 from all regions of the country. For 46.8% of respondents, immunization against the disease should be optional; 6.3% neither agree nor disagree and 1% did not know how to give an opinion.

Distrust in vaccines

According to the survey, three out of ten people (30%) believe that “vaccines against Covid-19 are not scientifically proven”. Another 52% trust the effectiveness of immunizers; 10.5% neither agree nor disagree with the statement and 6.4% do not know.

Studies carried out by pharmaceutical companies that developed the vaccines and, later, by renowned universities and institutions that monitor the response of immunizers after the start of vaccination campaigns, prove their efficacy and safety for different age groups.

early treatment

When asked if “chloroquine and the Covid kit allowed early treatment”, 41.5% of respondents disagreed with the statement; 35.3% agreed; 14.4% had no opinion and 8.8% were not sure.

The authors of the survey estimate that the improvement in the pandemic scenario in the country – with a reduction in the number of new daily cases and deaths caused by the disease after the start of vaccination – made the population start to see the coronavirus as a less dangerous virus.
