Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has announced that he will return to his home country in March. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, he said he wanted to lead the political opposition in Brazil. “The right-wing movement is not dead and will live on,” said the 67-year-old.

He also wants to defend himself against allegations that he is said to have incited anti-democratic protests. “I wasn’t even there and they want to pin it on me,” the ex-president said. Bolsonaro flew to Florida with his family two days before his term ended on January 1. Nor was it an attempted coup: “A putsch? What coup? Where was the leader? Where were the troops, where were the bombs?”

Brazil’s top court is investigating Bolsonaro

The right-wing politician had lost the presidential election against the leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace in Brasília on January 8, demanding a military coup. The Supreme Court is investigating, among other things, the “intellectual authorship” and the role of Bolsonaro.

Regarding the outcome of the election in Brazil, Bolsonaro said: “Losing is part of the electoral process. I’m not saying there was fraud, but the process was biased.” The role is “much more difficult” than he expected. (AP, Reuters)
