Under pressure from many parents, the Broward school board on Tuesday rejected a proposal for children to use transparent backpacks starting next school year; a measure that had already been announced by the county school authorities.

At the regular School Board meeting held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, the majority voted not to implement the proposed clear backpack policy for the 2023/24 school year, Broward County Public Schools management informed the community ( BCPS).

If the measure had been approved, as of August 21, students in that county would have had to replace their school backpacks with one made of translucent material to attend their respective campuses. It was a security measure, which many criticized as a violation of student privacy-

“As a result (of this vote), clear backpacks will no longer be discussed at the Board Workshop on June 20, 2023 or at the Special School Board Meeting on July 25, 2023,” the school district reported.

“The District welcomes the community’s participation and feedback on the clear backpacks and other security policies being considered. We are committed to making our schools safer than they are today and to considering security options in the future.” they said in a statement.

They look forward to further discussions with parents, staff, and community members about additional safety initiatives in the future.
