The Ministry of Labor announced this Wednesday, December 28, that bullfighting would be prohibited after knowing the participation of minors in the scheduled events. Through a guardianship of the councilor Terry Hurtadowhich was answered by the ministry, the prohibition of the rest of the bullfighting season was ordered, however, the security secretary of Cali, Jimmy Dranguetconfirmed that Yes, they can be carried out as long as minors do not participate.

The secretary affirmed that the company Tauroemoción, organizer of the bullfighting events scheduled within the framework of the Cali 2022 Fair, must guarantee that minors are not part of the presentationsafter learning that Marco Pérez and Mariana Mantilla Lemus, two young ‘promises’ of bullfighting, were part of the programming.

“The event can be held as long as the Plaza de Toros and the Tauroemoción company guarantee that minors will not participate in this event. The ministry made the decision that we share as an administration and categorically prohibit the participation of minors in a bullfighting event in the city,” said Dranguet.

The debate on the participation of children under 15 years of age, known by this union as the ‘young prodigy of bullfighting’, is totally closed, bullfights would be suspended if he shows up.

“They do not have permission, in addition, due to their condition as a minor and because the ministry considers that it is one of the most aberrational forms of child labor, the participation of minors in this fair was not authorized. The activities of Tauroemoción will be able to continue, but guaranteeing that the Government’s decision is complied with,” said the security secretary.

This decision was welcomed by alberto garciadirector of Tauroemoción, the company that organizes bullfighting events in Cali, who also confirmed that the activities that were scheduled will continue as normal, respecting the order of the Ministry of Labor regarding the participation of minors.

“Yes, there will be a bullfighting season in Cali, but Marco Pérez and Mariana Mantilla will not be able to participate. The activities continue, we invite you to support the freedom of the bullfighting fair because the prohibitions are more of a dictatorship than a democracy ”, he indicated.

In Colombia, the Law 916 of 2004regulates the “organization and development of bullfighting shows and activities related to them, in guarantee of the rights and interests of the public and those who intervene in them” and also specifies that this is an activity that has cultural roots that the law respects, “Bullfighting is considered an artistic expression of the human being.”

However, according to García, there is a bullfighting law in the country that authorizes the participation of under 15 years with steers of maximum two years of agebut they do not intend to put up an additional fight, so they will accept the measure of the ministry.

The prohibition is not a measure that the leaders of bullfighting accept, and this is what García stated, “If some day in the future bullfighting has to cease to exist, it must be because the people decide to do so with their non-attendance, but not because someone forbids it,” he said.
