The Ministry of Health starts on the 13th, in Amazonas, the multivaccination campaign against polio and measles. On the 27th, the initiative will take place in Acre. The information was disclosed this Tuesday (2nd), by the director of the Ministry’s Department of Immunization and Immunopredictable Diseases, Eder Gatti. 
The two states will be the initial focus of the national campaign due to the registration of a case of poliomyelitis in Peru, which occurred in December last year and was confirmed in March. The patient is a child from the district of Manseriche, 500 kilometers from the Brazilian border.

“It is an indigenous population region, so there is a lot of circulation on the border. This raised an alert”, explained Gatti. “We have a risk of reintroducing poliomyelitis, so our mission is to recover vaccine coverage, especially at the border,” he stressed.
According to him, Amazonas and Acre are already carrying out vaccination actions against polio even before the multivaccination campaign. “There has already been an action to intensify polio on the border, but we see a need to expand to the entire state (both in Amazonas and in Acre)”, he argued.
The idea is that the campaign lasts a week, but as there are many riverside villages and indigenous villages, it is possible that it will take longer than that, pondered Gatti.
Other states
According to him, the campaign will reach other states in the second half, possibly starting in August. “With the rest of the country, we are closing an agenda of pacts for the transfer of resources”, he said.
“The discussion (which is taking place) is whether we work in the logic of stratification, starting with critical priority municipalities and then moving on to other municipalities. This depends on articulation with states and municipalities, ”she explained.
In addition to immunizing against polio and measles, the campaign will seek to update vaccinations for children and adolescents up to 15 years of age, applying doses for this public.
“The idea is to use strategies of active search with community agents, vaccination in a school environment and check of the card whenever the person has access to health services”, he said.
Gatti participated, today (2nd), in the 7th International Symposium on Immunobiologicals, which will run until Thursday (4th), at the headquarters of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), in Rio de Janeiro.

The national secretary of Health Surveillance, Ethel Maciel, was also present. She highlighted that, according to data from the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), there are about two million children who do not have any vaccine protection in the country.
In addition to this active search and vaccinations in schools, Ethel believes that this number will be reduced due to the Bolsa Família program, which has as a conditionality the immunization of children.
“The lack of these doses is precisely in communities with the most disadvantaged socioeconomic level. With the withdrawal of conditionalities that existed for receiving income programs (by the previous government), this had a significant impact. These conditionalities are fundamental as an opportunity to explain the need to monitor these children and vaccines”, highlighted the secretary.
