Representatives from the city’s Health Department and the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit toured the neighborhood of Corona, Queens. This is part of the city’s health insurance registration campaign for all New Yorkers, regardless of their immigration status.
Julia Guzmán lives in Corona and has been without health insurance for seven years. She says that it costs her a lot of money to visit her doctors.
“If you don’t have insurance, you can spend three or four hundred, five hundred or more on medicine,” says Julia Guzmán, a health insurance applicant.
He made an appointment with a representative of the city’s Health Department. She will send an application to find out which health plan you qualify for.
“Most people need that. “It is a great help, yes.”
The Department of Health, together with the Mayor’s Public Participation Unit, began a campaign to register New Yorkers who do not have health insurance in the city.
“Because we understand that Corona and the community of western Queens is one of the communities in New York City with one of the lowest percentages of access to health insurance,” says Isolina de la Cruz, deputy director of the Unit. of Public Participation of the Mayor’s Office.
They have representatives available in twenty languages and all New Yorkers are eligible.
“For people who have documentation and for those who do not have documentation and it is based on each person’s income,” says Nancy Nieves, supervisor of the Queens Health Insurance Office.
These are the requirements to acquire medical insurance from the city:
-Identification, or passport of the country of origin
-Phone number
-Residence address
The city has different health insurance plans available and applicants have the option to choose the plan they want.
Ursula Rodríguez suffers from diabetes and hypertension. Although she has city health insurance, specialists will help her apply for a secondary plan that covers specialist appointments.
“This week I went to the doctor twice because they found my condition unwell and then you have to always go to the doctors to have the corresponding tests and studies done,” says Úrsula Rodríguez, a health insurance applicant.
