Cannes awards honorary Palme to actress Meryl Streep

PARS.- American actress Meryl Streep receive a Palme d’Or honorific at the inauguration of 77 Cannes Festivalnext May 14, the organizers reported this Thursday.

Streep (74 years old) is one of the most prestigious actresses in Hollywood, with 3 scares and 21 nominations, a record.

His career spans from dramas such as The Hunter, Memories of Africa y Kramer contra Kramer even family hits like The devil wears Prada y Oh mama!.

Streep has only been to Cannes once, in 1989, when she won the best actress award with A scream in the dark.

Recognition

“I feel immensely honored to receive the news of this prestigious award. Winning an award at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of cinema,” she said in a statement.

“Standing in the shadow of those who have been honored before makes you feel humbled and excited,” she added.

Streep joins a host of Hollywood veterans appearing at this year’s festival on the French Riviera, including the creator of Star WarsGeorge Lucas, who will also receive an honorary award at the closing ceremony.

“After almost 50 years in cinema and embodying countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is now part of our collective imagination, our shared love of cinema,” the festival organizers said in the statement.

Legendary Japanese animators Studio Ghibli will also receive an honorary Palme d’Or, the first time it has been awarded to a group.
