Last summer, the national shipping company faced a scandal that affected its image vis-à-vis its customers. Indeed, two ships from Algérie Ferries provided almost empty crossings from Skikda and Algiers to the port of Marseille in France.

Moreover, in accordance with the instructions of the competent authorities, an investigation was opened and entrusted to the national, economic and financial penal pole of the Algiers public prosecutor’s office, which ended up causing several heads to fall within the national maritime company.

Indeed, at the beginning of January 2023, these officials went to court. And this, to be condemned for deliberate squandering, illicit use of public funds and property, abuse of office, non-declaration of property and illicit enrichment.

Case of the almost empty ships of Algeria Ferries: the ex-CEO heavily sentenced

On this Thursday, January 19, 2023, the verdict fell for several officials of Algeria ferries. And this, within the framework of the file of the almost empty crossings. In particular, for the CEO, the commercial director and the head of the IT department.

Indeed, justice imposed six years in prison against the former CEO of Algeria ferries, Kamel Issad, associated with a fine of one million dinars to be paid. In addition, the commercial director was sentenced to five years in prison with, also, a fine of the same amount. As for the head of the IT department, the latter was given a one-year suspended prison sentence.

On the other hand, the other two leaders, on the run, were sentenced to 10 years in prison, with the launch of an international arrest warrant against them. The court also ordered the seizure of the property of its defendants, retained within the framework of this investigation carried out by the national criminal, economic and financial pole.
