The CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag accuses Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) of a lack of commitment to climate protection. “For the credibility of the commitment to climate protection, the convincing role model at home is crucial: Anyone who proclaims new international goals must achieve their own,” said climate protection spokesman and CDU party Vice Vice President Andreas Jung of the German Press Agency.

Jung was referring to the Chancellor’s statements at the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin, where representatives from around 40 countries had jointly prepared the next world climate conference in Dubai at the end of the year.

Scholz explained there that he saw Germany on the right track when it came to climate protection and advocated a global goal for the expansion of renewable energies.

Jung called Scholz “Chancellor climate gap”. “He is tearing down climate targets with his government and is unilaterally relying on coal in the crisis. He ignores the legal obligation for an immediate climate protection program and instead wants to soften the climate protection law,” complained the CDU politician.

So far, individual ministers have had to submit an immediate climate protection program if climate targets are missed in their area. The traffic light coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP wants to change this: In the future, the federal government should make adjustments overall, albeit “on the basis of the proposals” of the ministries primarily responsible.

“Olaf Scholz is now required in Berlin – close the climate gap, cancel the softening of the climate protection law,” demanded Jung. (dpa)
