He comes to the coronation in old clothes…
King Charles III (74) becomes the grand coronation ceremony wearing multiple layers of various royal robes – such as the “Imperial Mantle” (golden eagle brooch across the chest) at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. In addition, the coronation glove that his grandfather George VI. († 56) wore.
Charles’ wife, queen consort Camilla (75) initially wears a slightly tailored state robe from the coronation of her mother-in-law Queen Elizabeth II († 96).
The train is almost six meters long!
New: When exiting the church, SHE wears a new “Imperial Robe”. HE steps outside again in a purple cloak.
Camilla’s clothes haven’t been seen yet.
Under the roof of the church, the second wife of the regent is said to wear a robe specially made for her. A kind of cloak, as heard in palace circles. The cloak is said to be of violet velvet embroidered with gold thread.
Almost a secret is made about it, as if it were a wedding dress …
► Fashion Spectacular: For the first time, insects, such as bees and a beetle, are embroidered on the coronation robes. A sign of the couple’s love of nature.
Charles has been an enthusiastic environmentalist for decades and is said to be against the use of furs. However, the monarch will wear a special piece of leather. After all: The glove in which it was processed is “second hand”.
The so-called “Coronation glove” was also worn by grandfather George. The good piece was kept in the royal collection before the coronation.
A Wiltshire family business (established in 1777) undertook the restoration to allow the aging leather to be supple again to protect Charles’ right hand.
The glove company says: “We are very proud that the piece is being used. We made the gloves for his grandfather, for his great-grandfather King George V and already for his father King Edward.”
This ceremony seems to be in good hands.
